Effect of land rehabilitation measures on soil organic carbon fractions in semi-arid environment

چکیده

Soil erosion threatens the sustainable intensification of food systems among smallholder farmers in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). Intensifying adoption soil mitigation rehabilitation measures is thus needed urgently these ASALs, but scaling up depends on scientific evidence their contributions to key components such as organic carbon. However, there no information how existing influence carbon fractions management indices ASALs. This study evaluated Arenic Lixisols environments West Pokot County, Kenya. We different vegetation types (maize-beans intercrop pastures) with without two locally developed terrace designs for conservation ( Fanya Juu Chini ). Combining terracing annual cropping significantly increased total (TOC). The highest TOC (13 g C kg −1 ) was recorded pasturelands terraces while degraded land intervention found have lowest (6.0 Terraced farms longer residence time (>4 years old) had higher than (<4 old). Other properties remained stable age (1–5 years). Labile SOC non-labile differed within across or p < 0.05). Pasture crop high labile content 5.9 7.2 , respectively. followed trend age, i.e., increasing from 1 year 5 old. Combined pasture a index (CMI) 161.7, 14 times CMI interventions 1.5 combined system terraces. also directly correlated stayed system, Contrary other indices, weighted enrichment ratio inversely correlate terrace. Improvement resulted restorative likely improved quality ecosystem functions. Although play significant role restoration soils indicated by above-mentioned changes, they are most beneficial when used combination croplands because level disturbance flows both inputs outputs croplands.

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

influence of vegetation type and land management on soil organic carbon fractions in gonbad watershed, hamadan

introduction: soil organic matter is influenced strongly by vegetation cover and management, therefore it is proposed as the main indicator of soil quality and health. the changes in soil organic matter status occur much more rapidly in the labile pools than in organic c. thus, labile pools can be used as early indicators of changes in total organic matter that will become more obvious in the l...

Soil Organic Carbon Content and Stocks in Relation to Grazing Management in Semi-Arid Grasslands of Kenya

Rangelands cover approximately 85% of Kenya’s land mass and is a major resource for livestock farming with a considerable potential to mitigate climate change, yet these lands are stressed differently by various management. Our study aimed at determining the influence of grazing management systems (rotational, continuous and ungrazed) on soil organic carbon stocks in Yoani ranch located in the ...
